China Team to an Orphanage to the Disabled ~ experienced God’s Blessing in Disguise

A few days after the visit began, an accident happened.  One evening after dinner, the team was walking back to the hotel.  One of the team members who was a senior in age suddenly lost balanced and felt and was sent to a local hospital the next morning.  The doctor found that her right arm was dislocated and a surgery was needed.  Therefore, she and her husband immediately flew to Beijing in order to catch the flight back to Canada the same night.

At the beginning, this member felt very bad that she couldn’t do much for the disabled orphans, but when she looked back, she saw God’s blessing in it.  First, God’s protection was there when she fell as her face and head were not injured.  Second, in their journey from the Social Welfare Centre to Canada experienced the Chinese hospitality. In return, God also used them to bless the Chinese people they encountered.  As they took their journey back to Canada, those people whom they met including the doctors and nurses in the hospitals, the staff of the Social Welfare Centre, the flight attendants appreciated their love and sacrifice for the Chinese disabled orphans.  The driver of the Social Welfare Centre who drove them to the airport had become their godson.  Their mission has been accomplished in God’s way.

The aim of this exciting event is to share AMMiC’s vision to reach out to the visible ethnic communities in Canada, to promote our ministries by meeting some of our workers in person and listening to their testimonies, and to raise funds to support our church plants and other projects.

Prayer for our China Service Team

Our China Service Team has begun their service in an orphanage for the disabled for a few days.  It was encouraging to learn that the local staff of the orphanage recognised the team members who went there two years ago.  Would you pray with us for their service among the disabled orphans and local staff members?  They will be serving in the orphanage until July 27.

 

Please pray particular for Fay and John Gomes, two senior members from Montreal.  Fay fell on a pavement when they returned to the hotel from the orphanage.  She was taken to the hospital immediate, and the X-ray showed that her shoulder was dislocated and fractured.  She was advised that she should receive surgery as soon as possible.  Now, Fay and her husband John are on their way back to Montreal for the surgery and medical care.  Please pray for travel mercy as it will be a long hour flight.  Pray that God’s healing hands will be upon Fay.

2 baptised at Christ the Redeemer Toronto’s First Baptismal Service

Christ the Redeemer, Toronto had their first baptismal service on June 30, 2013 since her first Eucharist service on February 10, 2013.  Two adults were baptised.  They were from Mainland China and from Taiwan who had been friends of A Quiet Place, an outreach centre setup in September 2012.  Click here for more.

Ordination in Calgary

Praise be to God for the growing presence of ANiC in Calgary.

On June 30, 2013, the Rev. Tom Chi-Tong Lo was ordained to the Diaconate (transitional).  Almost 150 people gathered to witness the ordination and to give their support to Tom and Irene.  It was a blessing to see the strong bonds of unity and fellowship among ANiC churches in Calgary as the people from Grace Anglican, Good Shepherd South Asian and Good Shepherd Cantonese celebrated this joyous occasion together.  Many ecumenical friends from Chinese churches and theological seminary in Calgary participated as well.  This was truly an encouragement to the growing ministry of the Good Shepherd Calgary church plant among the Chinese community.  May the Lord continue to bless the ministry of Rev. Tom Lo and the people in Calgary.

New Church-Plant for South Asian in Calgary

We welcome Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd (South Asian) Calgary, our newest church plant.

Calgary has ranked third in proportion of visible minorities, just behind Toronto and Vancouver.  South Asian (mainly Indian and Pakistani) is the second largest visible minority group.  The vision of this Church-Plant is to reach out to those who speak Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi.  Many of them miss their cultural and religious customs – worshipping the Lord in their own language(s) and singing geet (hymns) and zaboors (psalms) which give them spiritual nourishment.

ANiC Asian & Multicultural Assembly was a success.

Bishop Stephen Leung gave his charge at the assembly.  He began by noting that God is a missional God who has entrusted us with proclaiming the Good News of salvation – of new creation – through Christ Jesus. The resulting faith community is to be a fellowship of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation through which the world can see the living Christ. “The attraction of the Church… is Christ himself reigning over the transformed community in his love.”

Noting that, by 2017, it is projected that around 20 per cent of Canada’s population    will be visible minorities, and that Canada is a magnet for international students, he said “we have a huge Gospel mission field among us” which, if we are faithful to the God’s mission, could resoundingly impact the growth of the Church worldwide. To this end AMMiC is: planting Asian and multicultural churches in Canada – five in the past year; charting a path for second generation leadership in these immigrant church communities; and seeking to serve the Church outside Canada by sending short-term mission teams.

He went on to discuss churches forming in Calgary, including: a Hindi-Urdu speaking church for South Asians; a South Sudanese Dinka community; and others –    potentially four or more new churches in Alberta. Toronto is also a huge multicultural mission field and AMMiC is partnering with the Anglican Greenhouse Movement in Chicago to train young lay catechists in campus ministry. Bishop Stephen said “We would like to see more church plants to different ethnic groups [in Toronto], including South Asians, Filipinos, Mandarin-speaking Chinese, Korean and Hispanic people.” In the Vancouver area, AMMiC has six church plants and parishes and a renovation of the Good Shepherd church building will include an Asian and Multicultural Ministry training centre. His vision is for more church plants on university campuses and in the suburbs to “…reach out to international students, Mandarin-speaking Chinese, South Asian,    Korean and Arab ethnic groups.”

He concluded by challenging us to grow spiritually as well as numerically through    conversion growth. “God calls you and me to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to    ethnic visible minority groups… Indeed, this mission is a great challenge that    demands far beyond mere human effort… God will reveal his way and call out leaders in his time….”
