Children Ministry Matters

A hands-on training and refresher course (2023)

Children Ministry Matters! Each child is precious in God’s sight and each child has Kingdom potential.  As we serve our children and their families, we are investing in this special people group, preparing them to be the next church leaders, teachers, pastors or church planters to turn the world upside down for His glory and honour!

We had valuable learning and sharing in Children Ministry Matters 2022. For a deeper learning in serving our children in church, we would like to present our children ministry course this fall.

Instructor – Dr. Valerie Yiu
Valerie has over 30 years of church ministry experience in Metro-Vancouver. She has effectively equipped children ministry volunteers and coached churches and church plants to develop their children’s and family ministries when she served as AMMiC Children’s Ministry Director.

Topics for the Learning Sessions
(Please note that all sessions will NOT be recorded)

1. How Children Think and Learn (October 3)

How do children think? In this session, we will discuss three principles that limit their ability to think clearly about abstract concepts and how they learn. What is critical thinking? Can we help children to develop their critical thinking? What does that have to do with their spiritual lives?

2. More Than Babysitting! Nursery, A Vital Ministry in the Church (October 11)

Is Nursery just a place for changing diapers and bottle feeding? Is it all filled with criers? Look again, the nursery is the handshake of the church! A vital ministry in the church.

3. Different Children, Different needs. (October 17)

Special Needs: are we missing opportunities to make every child welcomed and included? In Luke 14 Jesus said, “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.” When we open our arms to children with disabilities, we open our hearts to God. What a blessing!

4. A Look at Engaging Children in the Life of the Faith Community.  (October 24)

What are your current practices at your church with children? What roadblocks do you perceive you might face to more fully engage children in your church’s practice? We will look at some ways that your faith community can embrace and be more proactive about helping children more fully participate in the church.

5. A Roundtable for all Children’s Ministry Workers. (November 4)

A time to chat, to laugh, to discuss, and maybe to shed some tears of joy or frustration. Come and be encouraged, be able to share your unspoken concern, and be blessed by one another through prayers.
